Scotland is owned by a relatively small numbers of landowners. With this in mind, in 2003, Scottish lawmakers granted everyone the right to access unenclosed land in Scotland, for the purposes of education and recreation, including camping.
There are just a few exclusions: within the curtilage of buildings and farmyards, quarries, railway property and airfields, and where byelaws have been introduced (largely to curb antisocial behaviour) around Lomond and in the Trossachs National Park.
With this ‘right to roam’ comes a responsibility: to respect others, care for the environment and be accountable for your own actions. Above all, you must leave no trace; take everything away with you, down to the smallest of remnants of your presence.
